I Have a Disability. Can I Earn a Healthcare Management Degree?

For those students living with a disability there are a variety of options to help their ability to pursue a healthcare management degree. The first critical step is to  gather as much information as is possible before making a choice on a school. To find the best college, providing the most options for those with disabilities research into the school is a great first step. There are many resources on the Internet that can help students with disabilities make informed decisions. Most colleges and universities with healthcare management bachelor’s and master’s degree options provide services to students with physical disabilities including accessible buildings, note-takers, and testing accommodations.

Options for Healthcare Management Master’s Degrees

Some of the factors students with a disability may want to consider when looking for a healthcare management degree program include:

  • Making sure the campus has accommodations to meet the needs of the individual disability of the student.
  • Find a school with the right level of accommodations. Typically schools have a point of contact or an office that helps answer these important questions.
  • Find a school that provides accommodations in physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and also medical support.

Disabled students hold the right to receive a college education from a school with the appropriate adjustments made to accommodate their specific disability. This means that there should not be no discrimination or rejection based on a disability. It is important for potential college students to understand that prospective students do not need to specify their disability when applying for admission unless special accommodations need to be made. The college, however, does have a responsibility to answer students questions about disability services or support.

Each college or university throughout the United States, is required to provide necessary aids or modifications for equal education opportunities including easy registration, sign language interpreter, changing course or reducing load. It is important to understand the laws and regulations regarding disability laws including The Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA.

Are There Any Websites for Healthcare Management Students with Disabilities?

Disability.gov  is one of the leading resources for disabled students wanting to further their education. Once you access this site, simply register and begin searching for loans, grants and scholarships. It also covers additional topics on disability in addition to the helpful educational section. Some of the sections and topics worth checking out include:

Grants – The government does not offer student grants based on the needs of disabled students, however there are federal grants for those who meet the financial need. The largest federal grant program is the Pell Grant, awarding scholarship dollars each year for students who meet the minimum financial requirements. To get additional information on federal grants go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to see what is available.

There are also various disability grants for local, regional, national and state institutions that award to students in need. If you may be eligible for one of these grants you should contact the prospective college directly to reach out to the disability support service office. They can offer more information and referrals to meet the specific needs of the student.

Fortunately, there are many options for students with physical disabilities who want to further their education in healthcare management. It is important to find a program that best match the students individual needs.
