The Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University is located on the Columbia University Medical Center in Manhattan. Master of Health Administration
The Master of Health Administration (MHA) program combines coursework in organizational leadership and management, health policy, and public health and health systems. The curriculum provides students with the management skills of a business school education, but modified to the healthcare delivery system. Students develop competencies in analytical thinking, collaboration, communication, financial analysis, organizational awareness, resource management and allocation and strategic thinking. Graduates of the MHA program are prepared for management positions in clinics, non-profit organizations, hospitals, local, state and national government, as well as consulting careers, bio-pharmaceutical, finance, and insurance companies. The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) offers the degree as a full or part-time program.
- The Full-Time Master of Health Administration program is a two-year program that provides coursework in management, organizational leadership, health care policy and health systems. Graduates of the program are prepared for entry and mid-level managerial roles in healthcare with the foundation required to become senior executives. Professional development curriculum helps students to develop their interpersonal skills, communication strategies and career goals. Through a Consulting Workshop course, students can build their skills in strategic thinking, teamwork and effective communication. With a faculty member serving as an advisor, students collaborate as a team of consultants to develop a solution and present it to their client. Students are required to participate in a summer practicum designed to provide fieldwork experience.
- The part-time Master of Health Administration Management Program is a 28-month evening program that is designed for students currently working and who have at least one year of experience in a healthcare related industry. Classes for the part time program meet 2 nights per week however during some semesters students will take classes that meet 3 evenings per week. Electives are offered on weekends, and the health square experience occurs in the final summer of the program.
The Executive Masters of Healthcare Management
The Executive Masters of Healthcare Management (EMHM) Programs allow students to apply the theory and models to the workplace. Starting in the fall of 2012, the Mailman School of Public Health began offering the accelerated MPH, which is an intensive one-year program designed for those professionals seeking to further their education with a master’s degree in public health. Although coursework curriculum is similar to the curriculum of the 2-year degree, it can be completed at a more challenging pace. Coursework for the program provides the skills and leadership training needed to tackle today’s complex public health challenges and work effectively in a variety of public health settings.
Accelerated Masters in Public Health in Biostatistics
The Accelerated Masters in Public Health in Biostatistics (MPH) is an intensive, one-year program designed for highly motivated professionals seeking to enhance their career with a degree in public health. MPH students will receive a strong general public health orientation and specific training in quantitative methods, enabling them to use and adapt statistical procedures in the design and analysis of studies spanning the spectrum of health-related research. The one-year degree program includes the following components:
- Discipline courses that are required by the home department
- Core curriculum providing students with the broad, interlocking foundation of knowledge needed for a career in public health.
- Integration of science and practice to bridge the gap between traditional learning in a classroom and real-world experience working as a public health professional

Master of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences
The Master of Public Health (MPH) program in Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) prepare students for future careers in organizations concerned with environmental and occupational exposures to chemical and physical agents. Competencies for the MPH in Environmental Health Sciences includes:
- Identify important chemical, physical, and other exposures in the environment affecting the health of human populations
- Analyze how environmental contaminants (chemical, physical, and other exposures) interact with biological systems, including mechanisms of their adverse effects on humans
- Describe genetic and physiologic factors that affect susceptibility to adverse health outcomes following exposure to environmental contaminants
- Critically evaluate the current literature in environmental health sciences
- Evaluation of risks of environmental exposures to human populations through exposure, toxicological, and other relevant data into risk assessment methodology,
- Specific approaches for assessing, preventing, and controlling hazards that pose risks to human health and safety
- Identify biomarkers in evaluation of environmental exposures
- Communicate in writing and orally knowledge of environmental hazards to other professionals and the public, including effective risk communication
- Recommend appropriate interventions to control environmental risks and evaluate environmental control programs.
Graduates can pursue careers in chemical and pharmaceutical industries, local, state and federal environmental protection agencies, Health Departments, hospitals, public interest groups and academia.
Master of Public Health in Epidemiology
The Master of Public Health in Epidemiology program provides students an integrated interdisciplinary curriculum to allow students a focus in Epidemiology. Students take the interdisciplinary core courses in the fall semester of their first year, and the bulk of the Epidemiology courses in the spring semester.
Accelerated Master of Public Health in Epidemiology
The accelerated Master of Public Health in Epidemiology (MPH) is designed for highly motivated professionals to enhance their careers with a degree in public health. The one-year master’s program provides the broad, systemic understanding, critical thinking skills, and leadership skills required to understand and solve complex public health problems and work effectively with a variety of professional settings. Candidates for the Accelerated MPH program are required to have one of the following qualifications:
- A doctoral degree
- Within 24 months of completion of doctoral degree
- A master’s degree and at least 5 years related work experience
Students will undertake a practicum of at least 140 hours which can be completed on a part time or full time basis during spring or summer following their fall matriculation to complete all degree requirements within one year. A master’s thesis is not required for the program.

The Accelerated Master of Public Health in Population and Family Health (MPH) is an intensive, one-year (Fall, Spring, Summer) program for those working professionals seeking to further their career with a degree in public health. Master of Science in Biostatistics
The Master of Science in Biostatistics (MSB) is a degree providing specialized knowledge in biostatistics. The curriculum provides a broad based public health perspective to facilitate successful careers in public health and related areas. The Department of Biostatistics offers the MS degree in five areas of concentration, which are listed below.
Master of Science in Biostatistics in Clinical Research Methods
The Master of Science in Biostatistics with a concentration in Clinical Research Methods (MS/CRM) is designed for clinicians pursuing research careers in academic medicine. The purpose of the MS/CRM program is to teach the skills needed to design and analyze patient-oriented research studies. The program includes focused coursework and a supervised research project, to enhance the skills required to pursue research objectives. Mastery of applied bio-statistical methods allows students the ability to assemble compelling and effective clinical research projects and promote good research practices.
Accelerated Master of Science in Biostatistics Pre-Doctoral Training Track
The accelerated Master of Science in Biostatistics Pre-doctoral Training Track (MS/APT) program prepares students for PhD training in biostatistics and future careers in research, consultation and teaching bio-statistical methods and theory. For candidates with a bachelor’s degree, the MS/APT program allows them to qualify for PhD studies. Coursework for the program provides training in statistical theory and its applications. All students in the program are required to participate in a capstone experience to apply the skills learned in the program. The MS/APT is an accelerated program and generally takes one year to complete.
The Master of Science in Biostatistics/ Patient Oriented Research
The Master of Science (MS) in Biostatistics with emphasis in Patient Oriented Research (MS/POR) program offers students the fundamentals of clinical investigation, preparing them for careers as clinical scientists. The 30-credit program emphasizes quantitative training and critical thinking skills and strategies to address the challenges of clinical research and with a goal to compete more effectively for peer-reviewed research funding. Requirements for the program include a master’s essay in a NIH-style research grant application written under the supervision of a faculty member. Graduates earn an MS in Patient Oriented Research. All MS/POR candidates must have completed a doctorate in a clinical/translational discipline to apply to the program. Students begin study during the summer of their year of admission thereby completing the degree within 2 years. Competencies of the program include:
- Data Analysis and Computing to apply research design and analysis in reviewing research and programs outside of biostatistics and to understand the differences between quantitative problems addressed with standard methods and those needing input from a biostatistician.
- Public Health and Collaborative Research to discuss basic laboratory methods commonly used in-patient oriented research.
The Master of Science in Biostatistics/Pharmaceutical Statistics
The Master of Science in Biostatistics/ Pharmaceutical Statistics Track trains students in study design, research, and biostatistics. Most students are currently working in the pharmaceutical research industry or want a career in the industry. Graduates of the program will have the following proficiencies:
- Explain the FDA process of drug and device approval
- Classify clinical trials according to the research phase
- Choosing a design appropriate to the research question, disease, research phase, and therapy
- Design an analytic plan for the selected experimental data
- Prepare information required for FDA’s drug and device approvals
Candidates for the MS in Pharmaceutical Statistics are required to have at least two semesters of calculus and experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Students in the program must complete at least 35 credits of coursework and complete the Clinical Trials Network rotation. Students will be required to spend one semester in the Biostatistics Center for Clinical Trials Management.
Master of Science in Biostatistics/Theory and Methods Concentration
The Master of Science in Biostatistics with a concentration in Theory and Methods is designed for those students pursuing a career as biostatisticians applying statistical methods in health-related research. The program provides a stronger mathematical foundation in statistical methods as compared to a standard MPH, and many students pursue further doctoral study such as a PhD in biostatistics. Students can complete the 36-credit program in two years (four semesters) and students must complete a one-term practicum and capstone experience.
Master of Science in Biostatistics in Statistical Genetics
The Master of Science in Biostatistics with a concentration in Statistical Genetics arms students with the skills critical to the design and analysis of genetic data from human studies, as well as clinical aspects, laboratory issues, and modern statistical analyses. Coursework includes human and population genetics, biostatistics, epidemiology, statistical genetics, and computational modeling. The MS/SG Track prepares students planning careers in genetic research. The track consists of 36 academic credits and students are required a capstone experience. The program requires three semesters of full-time study and can be completed in two years.
The Master of Public Health/Medical Doctor
The Medical Doctor and Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) dual degree program is designed to meet the needs of students enrolled in Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S). Thirty-nine credits of coursework in public health are required beyond those required for the MD degree and can be completed in as little as two semesters or two years. Medical students can take courses at the School of Public Health at no additional cost during the first three years at P&S, except for the public health integrated core semester, which must be completed at Mailman. Most students begin their MPH between the third and fourth year of medical school, completing both degrees in five years. For completion of the program, a global health practicum of at least one month’s duration is required. Practicums can take place at an international site or as a domestic practicum serving immigrant populations. Students of the dual program must comply with registration requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons for the MD degree and the Mailman School of Public Health for the MPH degree.
Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health Dual Degree with Global Health Focus
With a growing interest in health issues across the world, dual degree students in the Medical Doctor/Master of Public Health Dual Degree (MD/MPH) program now have the ability to concentrate on global health issues while completing their MPH degree requirements. Students at the College of Physicians and Surgeons wishing to pursue the global health-focused MPH dual degree program should apply to the Mailman School to complete the one year accelerated program. All students are required to complete a global health practicum for at least one month’s duration. The practicum can be in a clinical setting and must constitute a public health project.
Master of Science in Urban Planning/Master of Public Health
The Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and the Mailman School of Public Health offer a Master of Science in Urban Planning and Master of Public Health dual degree that can be completed in as little as five semesters. Students are required to complete 84 credit hours with three semesters in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and two semesters in the School of Public Health. Students are responsible for meeting with both program advisors to meet individual curriculum requirements as well requirements of residency.
